4 Great Tools for Time Tracking & Invoicing as a Freelancer
When you’re a freelancer juggling multiple clients, projects, and deadlines, time tracking and invoicing can quickly start feeling like a full-time job of its own.
Luckily, there are some great tools that make it easier to stay organized, track your billable hours, and get paid faster - Without building a spreadsheet from scratch every week. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to improve your current workflow, here are four solid tools worth checking out.
🕒 Toggl
- Great for: Time tracking, Invoicing
- Cost: Starts at $0
- Why I love it: Toggl is my personal go-to. It’s simple, intuitive, and works well whether you’re tracking one project or juggling a dozen across different clients. You can set up clients, projects, and tags, which makes it easy to stay organized and pull clean reports. The CSV export is great for building your own dashboards or reconciling time at the end of the month.
While I haven’t used their built-in invoicing features, they’re available– making it a solid all-in-one option for freelancers on a budget.
📊 Everhour
- Great for: Time tracking, Reporting, Asana integrations
- Cost: Starts at $0
- Why it’s worth checking out: Everhour makes it easy to track time directly inside tools like Asana, Trello, Notion, and ClickUp. The built-in reporting helps break down hours by task or client, and you can set budgets or build simple dashboards to stay on top of project scope. Invoicing exists, but it’s secondary to the tracking features.
🔧 Harvest
- Great for: Time tracking, Invoicing
- Cost: Starts at $0 (free tier includes up to 2 projects)
- Why others love it: While I don’t use Harvest myself, I know many freelancers who swear by it. It offers a clean interface, strong reporting, and a combo of time tracking and invoicing that’s especially helpful for client-based work. Harvest offers payment options through Stripe and Paypal, and integrates with popular tools like Asana,Trello, Quickbooks and Slack.
If you’re looking for something that bridges the gap between time tracking and client billing, Harvest’s free tier is worth exploring.
✅ Asana (Advanced Tier)
- Great for: Time tracking (for project-based workflows)
- Cost: Available in the Advanced tier ($24.99/month per user)
- Why it’s worth mentioning: If you're already using Asana Advanced for project or content management, you can enable time tracking using native features like time fields, workload tracking, or integrations (like Everhour or Harvest). It’s not ideal as a standalone time tracker, but it’s a great value-add if you’re managing freelance work in Asana already.
Final Thoughts: Choose the Tools That Fit You
Time tracking and invoicing tools are only helpful if they actually support the way you work. Some freelancers want deep reporting and automation, others just want something that’s quick and easy to send to clients at the end of the week. No matter your style, the tools above can help you spend less time doing admin– and more time doing the work you love.
